Building Categorisation

Building Categorisation Matrix – based on Building Condition Assessment and Geological Assessment of Hardcore

a. In these cases the Engineer shall consider alternative probable causes for the damage other than pyritic heave.
b. In cases where the damage condition rating and the hardcore classification are inconsistent and there is a lack of consensus between the Engineer and Professional Geologist/Chartered Geotechnical Engineer on the issue of a Category B certificate, a Category C certificate is issued by default.

NOTE 1
Shaded are as identify the technic al combinations of results of the Building Condition Assessment and the assessment of the hardcore which occur infrequently.

NOTE 2
Category A – Negligible Risk – The building has a Damage Condition Rating of O and hardcore which has negligible susceptibility to expansion. Alternatively, the building has a Damage Condition Rating of 1 or 2, and hardcore which has negligible susceptibility to expansion and an alternative probable cause for the damage other than pyritic heave, is likely.

Category B – Low Risk – The building has a Damage Condition Rating of O or a Damage Condition Rating of 1 (without progression), consistent with pyritic heave, and hardcore with low susceptibility to expansion. There is potential for future minor damage from pyritic heave.

Category C – Medium Risk – The building has a Damage Condition Rating of O or a Damage Condition Rating of 1 (without progression), consistent with pyritic heave, and hardcore with medium or significant susceptibility to expansion. Alternatively, the building has a Damage Condition Rating of 1 (without progression) consistent with pyritic heave and hardcore with low susceptibility to expansion. There is potential for future minor or significant damage from pyritic heave.

Category D – Significant Pyritic Damage – The building has a Damage Condition Rating of 1 (with progression) or a Damage Condition Rating of 2, consistent with pyritic heave, and hardcore with low to significant susceptibility to expansion.
